Discovering Anna Campbell

I wish I could write historical romances, if only to overuse the word debauchery. Honestly, that’s my new favorite word.

And I owe my newfound affection for this word to the talented author Anna Campbell. By chance I happened to discover her books, and they are downright addictive and gripping. She has a strong emotional voice that is so fitting to the historical genre. Not just that—although, of course, there’s a tendency to modernize characters nowadays—when I read her books I feel that she portrays her characters in a way that is realistic to their particular period.

I first read Claiming the Courtesan and was blown away. The reviews were controversial, and yeah, the book is thought provoking due to its content. (Forgive my vagueness, but I’m really trying not to spoil it for you.) There were times the hero’s actions were quite disturbing, and other times, quite alluring. At the end of the book, even after the satisfying ending, I was still curious about her style and what else she could come up with.

So I moved on to His Captive Sin. Very good—but in this one, the hero is very damaged both physically and mentally. I like damaged heroes, but this one felt sorry for himself for most of the book, and this made it hard for me to really like him. Too much self-pity is off-putting. But still, Ms. Campbell’s effortless storytelling made me want to give her one more shot.

Midnight’s Wild Passion really got my attention. Out of all of her books (I’ve just started the fourth), this was by far my fave. The hero, the Marquess of Ranelaw, wants revenge from a certain Lord Demarest after the said lord ruined his sister. He wants to seduce the lord’s daughter but instead ends up falling for the daughter’s companion (the former Lady Antonia, a woman who already was ruined herself). This book is crackling with strong conflict, hot love scenes and likeable characters. If you enjoy fast-paced historical romances, make sure you check this one out.

Now it’s time for my everyday debaucheries. Talk to you later!

Brazil: One country. Five regions. One Girly Books blog post.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are ready for takeoff…

Even though we don’t actually read this line everytime we read a romance novel, it’s safe to say that a lot of times we hear it in our imaginations. Or perhaps I do, anyway. Hey, stranger things have happened in my life. But now, let’s talk about traveling—through books!

As a reader, I love to go places I haven’t been. As a writer, I love to feature some of my favorite destinations in books. In A Vengeful Affair, my hero and heroine share arguments, discoveries and a sizzling attraction in London, Paris and Switzerland. In the upcoming Heating Up Hawaii…well, do I really need to say it? J

But today, as part of the fabulous Girly Books BlogHop, I’ll be taking you to Brazil, where my untitled WIP is set. Of course, ithelps that Brazil is also where I’m from originally, even though I’ve lived in Austin, Texas for the last ten years. Brazil is such a resourceful, diverse country that I’ve been wanting to use it as the backdrop for a romance novel for a while.

In Brazil, there’s something for everyone. To givey ou one example, my WIP starts in glamorous and internationally known Rio,filled with breathtaking views and gorgeous beaches. (It’s also one of my favorite cities in the world.) But then we go to Northeast Brazil, which is a completely different area—especially because I take the readers to the land of a Brazilian Indian tribe. Yes. Other things come into play, such as environmental and cultural issues and howvulnerable these tribes are nowadays, with Brazil’s economy booming and modern life swallowing their traditions and customs. I wanted to bring up a subject that’s taboo even for Brazilians. There is so much more to my country than Carnaval and  women in G-stringbikinis. Really.

A little bit of a geography lesson here, because I know that’s what you’re craving. (I promise it won’t be boring!) Brazil is divided into five main regions: North (think the Amazon and tons of river, lushforest and internationally debated environmental shenanigans), Northeast (a region rich in folklore, music and cuisine…think yummy seafood and beautiful beaches), Central West (sparsely populated with dry weather; it includes Brasilia, the country’s capital), South (very developed both rurally andeconomically; think gauchos—Brazilian cowboys—plus tons of German descendants and world-renowned steakhouses) and Southeast (highly industrialized cities like Rio and Sao Paulo; it’s the region where most of the country’s population resides). Each of the regions has a rich history complete with unique accents, delicious local dishes and more. My plan is to turn my WIP into a series, and each romance will have a different area of Brazil as its background.

It's been forever...

Folks, I know it’s been forever.

But the year sounds promising so far. As you might have heard on my FB or just my squealing from the rooftop, exclusive rights for A Vengeful Affair have been licensed to established Greek publisher Compupress, for both physical copies and ebooks!

How exciting is that? Javier and Vivian will be going to Greece! Well, it’s not today or tomorrow, but it’s certainly HAPPENING and that’s all that matters J I’m so excited!

I’m also revamping my website and hopefully by February it’ll be ready for you all to enjoy J I really LOVE the new look and can’t wait to share it with you all.

I might have other good news to share a couple of weeks from now, and really I’m trying really hard to stay calm!  BUT IT’S HARD! Patience is not my best virtue.

Other than that, all is well.

Hope you’ve had a fantastic holiday season and you are all reenergized for 2013.

Until later,

Carmen
